Missouri grocery prices rise above the national average

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- It may be a rare occurrence, but grocery prices in Missouri rose to more than the national average in the final quarter of 2011.

Gov. Nixon encourages Missourians to nominate citizen heroes for award

JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Jay Nixon today encouraged the nomination of deserving Missourians for the Citizen Service Before Self Honors, which recognize and honor ordinary Americans who become extraordinary through their indomitable courage and selflessness.

Fire crews respond for flue fire - Flames spotted by neighbor coming from flue

This evening at 6:11 p.m. the New Haven Berger Fire Department responded to the 200 block of Locust Street for a report of an active flue fire.

Deputy Chief Brad Maune was the first to arrive on the scene and confirmed the initial report.  Maune said, “When I first arrived noticeable embers were still coming out of the chimney”.

New Haven looks for answers

New Haven will play for third place tomorrow in the South Callaway Tournament at 4:30 p.m.

The Rocks began the week with an easy win on Tue. over New Bloomfield 63-32, however last night #6 Montgomery County upset #2 New Haven 37-28.  The Rocks had beaten the Wildcats during the first part of the season back in December.

Spring flooding affected 2011's corn and soybean figures

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo - Officials with USDA blame spring and summer flooding n the Missouri and Mississippi river basins and a hot dry summer for numbers that didn’t stack up to 2010’s record corn and soybean production figures.

Senator Blunt undergoes heart surgery

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo
-- Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt is said to be fine after
undergoing a heart procedure.

Missouri’s junior senator underwent a procedure Thursday to implant a
stent in the front of his heart. Doctors at George Washington University Medical Center detected a blockage in Blunt’s heart during a routine physical earlier this week.

Harrisburg's perfect record still intact, defeat Lady Rocks 57-46

   Kayla Oetterer is fouled as she goes up with authority, banking it in.

Mokane, Mo.Kayla Oetterer’s game high 17 points was not enough for New Haven to knock off undefeated and number one seed Harrisburg in Thursday night’s game at South Callaway.

Celebrating 50th Wedding Anniversary

Jim and Melva Wurtz of Stony Hill will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sat., Jan. 14.

Mr. and Mrs. Wurtz were married at St. James Church in Stony Hill on Jan. 14 1962 by the Rev. Edward Mayer.

Jim and Melva have two sons, Jeff of Union, Mo. and Jerry of Stony Hill.

Missourians may see cigarette tax increase on November's ballot

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.
– The heat is on to increase Missouri’s relatively low tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products.

On Thursday, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan approved a ballot referendum petition for circulation by the American Cancer Society.

Body of a Missouri Hero, Trooper Guthrie, recovered after five months of searching

On Thurs., Jan. 12, 2012, at approximately 2:00 p.m. the body of Missouri State Trooper Frederick F. "Fred" Guthrie Jr was located in a brush pile south of where K-9 Reed was recovered near the original search site where they went missing working Missouri River flood duty in the area of Big Lake on Missouri Highway 118 at Missouri Highway 111 in Holt County, Mo.

OBITUARY: Hermann: Randy Lee Schuch (Sept. 21 1965 - Jan 10, 2012)

Randy Lee Schuch, 55, of Hermann, passed away on Tues., Jan 10th, 2012 at Hermann Rod & Gun Club, Hermann.

Mr. Schuch was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on Sept. 21, 1956, the son of the late Eugene Emil and Bessie W. (Maire) Schuch who survives him of Hermann, Missouri.

Schuch is also survived by two brothers Kenneth Schuch & wife Joyce of Belle, Missouri and Ward Schuch of Hermann.

He worked several jobs around the area, in a nursing home and hospital and he has been his mother’s caregiver for many years.

No services will be held.
