QUICK THOUGHT: The "student" in student athlete goes unnoticed

--Generally, one would read in the newspaper about which students made All-Conference, All-Districts, or All-State in sports.  Don’t get me wrong, these students deserve the recognition and a story written about their achievement, all of which I have included in this article.

However, a story you won’t read about, other than a list of names in the paper, are the athletes who were Academic All-Conference.  They deserve the same recognition along with interviews from coaches who have the same kids in their classes as they do on their teams.

New Haven's JV defends Conference Title - Bright future for shamrock volleyball

--New Haven’s Junior Varsity Volleyball team’s resolve and determination led them to an overall season record of 22-3-1, propelled them to a first place finish in the Pacific Tournament and Four Rivers Conference Champions for the second straight year.

Good teams win games, but great teams win games separated by just a few points.  New Haven did what great teams do; find a way to win.

. – Wednesday New Haven’s season came to an end after falling short to undefeated Valle Catholic (31-0) in the Class 1 District 5 Championship Match. (Game summary below.)

We sat down with Volleyball Coach Jaime Hoener and talked about her team and their overall season.  During our conversation Hoener couldn’t have praised her team enough saying, “They are just great overall people”

Bismarck, Mo. - Wednesday night the Lady Shamrock’s season was cut short after number one seeded Valle Catholic defeated New Haven in two sets 25-16, 25-21.

Bismarck, Mo. - After injuring here shoulder and possibly her career, it could have not been more fitting that Peacut serve an ace to send the Shamrocks playing for a district title.

New Haven won the first set 25-23.  The Lady Shamrocks filled with energy and determination; New Haven has propelled themselves into the Class 1 District 5 District Championship Match.

Bismarck, Mo. – Monday night New Haven was able to overcome a slow start in the first set, cruising to an easy win over Crystal City in two sets. (25-21, 25-14)

Union, Mo. – After coming off a two set win over Linn on Monday the Lady Shamrocks traveled to Union looking for their fourth straight win and momentum as they begin their postseason on Monday at Bismark.

Lady Shamrocks knock off St. Clair and Owensivlle

Owensville, Mo. – New Haven snapped a four game losing streak on Tuesday by knocking off St. Clair in three sets before traveling to Owensville (13-12, 3-3) on Thursday.

Thursday night marked the first time this year New Haven (17-9, 4-2) was able to win a match losing the first set.  After Owensville went on to win the first set, 25-21, the Lady Shamrocks came back taking the second and third sets and picking up their 17th on the year.

Pacific, Mo. – Volleyball is about emotion and momentum. A single error can end up changing the complexity of an entire match.

Thursday night’s match at Pacific a few mistakes by both teams ended up being the difference between Pacific winning and New Haven suffering their fourth straight loss.  You can’t narrow it down to a single mistake but unable to recover from a momentum killer can play a huge factor

New Haven, Mo. – Monday night the Lady Shamrocks gave the Fatima Lady Comets (21-3) a run for their money.  With the addition of sophomore Katie Peirick and running a new offense New Haven seemed reenergized and a completely different team than last Thursday in the Hermann Tournament.

New Haven went on to take on Pacific after they were run over by Hermann, 25-12, 25-7, putting Pacific in the third place game and Hermann to play Borgia for the championship.

Hermann, Mo. - Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Hermann Volleyball Tournament New Haven will get their chance to rectify their loss to Borgia, which happened only one week ago.

The two teams will clash in what could be a grueling battle with both teams knowing more about each other.

Pacific knocks off Washington - New Haven number 1 seed

Hermann, Mo. – New Haven will advance the semifinals as the number seed, finishing Monday night with a record of 5-1, splitting sets with Washington.  New Haven will take on the number 2 seed from Pool B, which will be held Tuesday night at 5 p.m.

Washington entered Monday night’s final match with a record of 3-1, needing to win one set to guarantee a spot in Thursday’s tournament.  On the other hand Pacific was 2-2 and had to win both sets to play in Thursday’s semifinal match

Sophomore Taylor Covington (9) had a game high six kills and currently leads the team with 96 kills on the year.

New Haven, Mo.Megan Bauer had an all around career match, serving night points, two aces, along with 10 assists and seven digs.  Taylor Covington recorded a team high six kills off nine attempts, as New Haven snapped back to back losses before heading into this weeks Hermann Volleyball Tournament.

Borgia downs New Haven in two sets - JV's winning streak ends

Washington, Mo. – Monday night’s match had a different story ending compared to a year ago when New Haven upset Borgia for the first time in 27 years.  Monday night Borgia also ended the JV’s perfect 12-0 record in two sets.

Coach Brad Bruns said, “Last year’s loss at New Haven effected a lot of the girls on the team and one thing was they did not what that to happen again.”
