8 month old listed in critical condition -- Father hit child causing head injury

On Sat., Sept. 10, the mother of an 8-month old male picked him up from his father.  The mother and father of the child are currently separated.

The mother noticed what appeared to have burn marks on the child’s leg area.  The mother took the child to Mercy Hospital in Washington, Mo.  The emergency room physicians examined the burns and also located a head injury.

The mother returned home with the child and notified the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.  That night, the child began having a seizure.  The child was taken to Mercy Hospital in Washington and then flown to Cardinal Glennon in St. Louis.  A C.A.T. scan revealed a cause of the child’s head injury to be from a severe blow to the head.  The child is currently listed in critical condition.

Deputies located the father of the child at Cardinal Glennon Hospital.  He was taken in to custody by authorities in St. Louis on a probation violation warrant and returned to Franklin County.

On Sept 15, during an interview with Franklin County Investigators, the father admitted to striking the child’s head against an object during a moment of anger.

The father is a white male, age 23 with no listed residence.  He had been staying with relatives in the Union area.

The father is be held at Franklin County pending charges for child endangerment and domestic assault.  His name is being withheld until offical charges are filed.  The report has been forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor.
