A Republican-leaning polling group finds Republican Congressman Todd Akin ahead of incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill

Wenzel Strategies gives Akin a 49 to 45 percent margin over McCaskill in a sample of 1-thousand likely voters.

In a news release, Wenzel said the agency surveyed more Democrats than Republicans. It also showed that Akin holds a 50 to 41 percent lead over McCaskill among voters that identify themselves as independent.

Most other pollsters looking at the race have consistently showed McCaskill with a six to ten percent lead over Akin since late August when he made comments about legitimate rape and spontaneous abortion.
