Hermann, Mo. - The 11th Annual Black Gold Classic Fastpitch Tournament will take place this weekend June 23rd and 24th in Hermann, Mo. at the City Park and at Rhineland's field.  Hermann’s fastpitch team, Black Gold, will be hosting the 8-team tournament.

The tournament consists of a round-robin format with two 4-team pools on Saturday with the top 3 teams from each pool advancing to a single elimination tournament on Sunday.

The tournament field consists of three Missouri teams including Kelso Fastpitch from Kelso, MO, The Tribe from St. Charles, MO along with the Hermann team, two Illinois teams, the Falcons from Pinckneyville, IL and the Stallions from Belleville, IL and three Kansas teams which are the Wave and Toros from Topeka, KS plus the Wizards from El Dorado, KS.

The Toros, Kelso and Hermann teams are the top two teams and favored to face off in Sunday’s championship game.  Pitching will play a pivotal role throughout the weekend, especially with temperatures forecasted to be in the mid 90’s on Saturday and 100 degrees on Sunday.

The Hermann team currently has an 8-2 record and is 6-0 in the Gateway Travel League, played at C & H Park in St. Charles, Mo.

Earlier this month Hermann played well in one of the longest running and competitive tournaments in the country, the Kelso Klassic in Kelso, Mo., finishing 2-2 on the weekend.  The team finished 5th place in the 14-team tournament.  The Topeka Toros finished 2nd and Kelso Fastpitch finished 4th.

The local team features several New Haven area players including rookies Andrew Schwentker and Keaton Rohlfing along with longtime veteran pitcher, Eric Steinbeck, and former resident Matt Benz.

Players from the Hermann area include: Allen Speckhals, Branden Speckhals, Andy Emmons, Justin Wurtz, Jake Murphy, Kurt Speckhals, Cullen Speckhals, Terry Coon, Brent Schowe, Dean Haeffner, and Scott Borcherding from Hazelwood, Mo.

Hermann’s team, made up of local and former baseball players compared to the vast majority of teams they play who bring in players from all over the world, particular New Zealand, where fast pitch is as popular as baseball is in the U.S.  In four of the team’s games in Kelso, they faced two pitchers from New Zealand including one that will be pitching for the Toros.
