St. Clair, Mo. – Earlier this afternoon (Wednesday) around 1:38 p.m., Franklin County Deputies responded to what initially was reported as a peace disturbance.

They responded to the 2000 block of Barton Road located seven miles south of St. Clair off of Highway 47.

The only information the reporting party gave was that a subject was tearing up the inside of his residence.

When deputies arrived they located a 17-year-old white male laying in the front yard of the residence after he had been shot in the leg.

The shooter who lives at the residence has been identified as an 18-year-old.

Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said the 18-year-old came out of the residence and told deputies the he had shot the 17-year-old.

At this point of the investigation information obtained indicates the victim had been staying at the residence for the past few days.  The suspect lives at the residence with his father who was not at home during the time of the shooting.

Toelke said that apparently an argument began between the two teenagers, which led to the suspect shooting the 17-year-old with a 12-gage shotgun.

The suspect was taken into custody for investigation of first-degree assault.

Toelke said, “We have 24 hours to officially charge the suspect before he can be released.  At this time the suspect has not officially been charged while our investigators work on gathering evidence that would prove what said is actually what happened.”

The victim was transported to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur, Mo.  It was reported that the victim was initially from Owensville, Mo.

The victim’s condition is not known at this time and further investigation is being conducted.
