Union, Mo. – Monday morning’s fire inside of McDonalds located at the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 47 in Union could have easily been much worse if not for Union Firefighters' quick response.

Crews were dispatched at 9:45 a.m. for a first alarm commercial structure fire.  Along with Union Fire Department, one truck from St. Clair, Beaufort/Leslie, and Union EMS also responded to the scene.

When fire crews arrived, smoke was visible from the front of McDonalds and all employees had evacuated the building.

Firefighters made an interior attack and within minutes had the fire extinguished.  Crews also utilized their ladder truck and thermal imaging camera to check the roof, making sure the fire had not spread into the upper portion of the building.

Union Fire Chief Russell Hamilton told Quick News, “The store manager is telling us they had a fire in one of the fryers and attempts to control it were unsuccessful.”

Firefighters check for "hot spots" with the use of a thermo image camera.

“There is very little tolerance with the oils they use, so when fires occur, they quickly spread.  The fire began spreading at a rapid pace at which time employees evacuated the building and called 911.”

Chief Hamilton said that after they arrived, crews entered the building, extinguishing the fire within minutes.

Chief Hamilton complemented his crews for making entry as quickly as they did, locating the fire, and preventing further damage. “I am proud of our guys, they really did an excellent job.”

Chief Hamilton was unable to comment on the amount of damage sustained since he had not been inside the building when we spoke with him.  Hamilton also noted the there were no injuries.
