New Haven, Mo - The New Haven High School Class of 2012s valedictorian, Abigail Menke, concluded her commencement speech by saying,  “Although it is hard to believe, our high school careers are over, embrace change and above all, make every moment count.”

Menke described her class’s wide range of personalities and characteristics throughout her speech.  Menke said, “We’ve got country boys who always wear boots and girls who love country boys.”

While graduates said their goodbyes, High School Principal, Tim Strobel said his goodbyes to three teachers -- having taught for a combined 80 years plus at New Haven High School, Dave Luecke, Ruth Steinhoff, and John Estes.

This year’s salutatorian, Lance Gerlemann said,  “I would like to thank Mr. Strobel and the entire teaching staff, I can’t thank them enough for everything they have taught me.”

Gerlemann said, “I would like to give a special thanks to one teacher…he’s not going to be here next year, but I’d like to thank Mr. Luecke [Dave Luecke] for all the extra time after school and on the weekends that he spent with me working on my projects the past few years, something I will keep with me the rest of my life…I can’t thank him enough.”

Gerlemann and Menke both thanked their parents, friends, and fellow classmates for making their four years of high school so enjoyable and wished everyone the best of luck.

The time had come for the presentation of diplomas.  Every year after Mr. Strobel announces each senior to come and receive their diploma, students shake his hand, many of which give him a hug along with “something” as a way to remember that graduating class.

This year's class each gave Mr. Strobel either an orange or a carrot and also placed a watermelon next to his chair before the graduation ceremony had begun.  Several students said they did not want him to run out of oranges during the summer.

Congratulations to New Haven High School’s 106th graduating class and best of luck to everyone in their future endeavors.
