New Haven, Mo -- The Lady Shamrocks come into the 2011-2012 season returning three starters: senior forwards, Kayla Oetterer and Elise McDonald and sophomore point guard Rachel Steinhoff.  New Haven was 15-12, losing to St. Vincent in the District Championship Game.

We spoke with Coach Dave Luecke about this year’s team and upcoming season opener against Hermann in the first round of the Mont. Co tournament.

Coach Luecke said, “I have seen our team improve over the past few weeks and am pleased with the intensity they have shown thus far.”  Luecke said they have put emphasis on being mentally prepared.  He said, “Last year I think there were several times we lacked mental toughness, which is my fault.  So far this year, I feel our girls our mentally more focused.”

The team should be well balanced; Oetterer and McDonald are two seniors with decent quickness, height, and experienced playing at the varsity level.  Oetterer will be one of the team’s top offensive threats, averaging a team high 14 pts and 8 rebounds a game last year.  Steinhoff is a very talented guard who started as a freshman last year averaging 9 points a game.  She was a good player as a freshman and will be even better this year after playing a lot of basketball this past summer.

New Haven will get help from last year’s JV team, Kierstin Monzyk, Emily Kallmeyer, and Stephanie Gerling, adding depth from the bench.  Something most New Haven teams have always lacked in the past.

New Haven is seeded fifth and will play the fourth seeded Hermann Lady Bearcats, Mon. night in the first round at Montgomery.  Hermann comes off a second place finish in last year’s state tournament and will be a tough season opener for the Lady Rocks.

The Lady Rocks have plenty of talent, but their success will be determined on their ability to be focused and mentally prepared night in and night out and how well they gel as a team.

Game time for Mon. night will be 6 p.m. at Montgomery County High School.
