Hunter out smarted by raccoon

Robertsville, Mo. - Last night at approximately 8:30 p.m. Franklin County Deputies responded to a report of an accidental shooting at River Round Access near Old Cove Road approximately 10 miles southeast of Robertsville, Mo.

After deputies arrived on the scene they discovered that three male subjects were coon hunting in the area.  During the hunt, one of the subjects wounded a raccoon.

A second subject was holding the raccoon down with his foot to prevent it from getting away.  The plan was for the subject to remove his foot and the other subject was going to shoot the animal.

When the victim moved his foot, the animal attempted to flee.  The victim attempted to put his foot back on the animal at which time the other subject fired at the animal striking the victim in the foot.

The victim is identified as Tyler Sumner, a white male, age 18 from St. Clair.

Members of the Missouri Department of Conservation, St. Clair Ambulance, and St. Clair Fire also responded.
