New Haven, Mo. – Despite Rachel Steinhoff’s 19 points on 8-14 shooting the Shamrocks were handed their fourth loss overall and remain winless (0-3) in conference play as Union pulled off a four point win, 44-40.

Union’s young sophomore Bethany Coons helped seal the deal for the Lady Wildcats, going four of six from the line during the finial two minutes to finish with 11 points.  Union’s senior forward Rachel Bassett scored a team 15 points and a difficult matchup for New Haven.

The outcome of Thursday night’s game, arguably could be traced back to the final seconds prior to halftime, when Stephanie Scheer gave New Haven a five point lead, 19-14 with 40 seconds left on the clock.

After a quick two points, pulling Union within three, 19-16, New Haven was given the chance to end the first half with at least a three point lead.

“I was wanting to take the last shot.  No fault to Kayla [Meyer] for taking the shot, she was open and you can’t give up an open shot.  We should have never passed the ball inside to begin with.  Instead of at least being up by three, they come down hit a three at the buzzer.  Really it was a five point swing, at worst we should have had a three point led at halftime” coach Doug Peirick said after the game.

The second killer for New Haven was not shooting a single free throw while Union only shot 47% they attempted 19 free throws.  Take away the last 12 seconds in the first half and add a few free throws; New Haven walks away with a win.

New Haven committed eight turnovers compared to Union’s 10 and our shot the Lady Wildcats 54 to 30.  However Union finished shooting 47% while New Haven struggled, shooting just 36%.

Peirick said, “We had good looks at the basket, just didn’t convert.”
