Preseason outlook on Lady Shamrock Softball

Softball practice began last week for the Lady Shamrocks coming off of a 12-8 record last year, winning the New Haven Classic, and finishing fourth in the Four Rivers Conference.  This was the team’s second season in a row with a winning record after finishing 13-9 in 2009.

The Lady Rock’s star player, Julie Scheer, graduated this past spring leaving behind big shoes to be filled.  She pitched every game for the Lady Rocks last year, with a total of 120 innings pitched and an ERA of only 2.9.  Scheer also struck out 132 batters averaging just under 8 strikeouts a game.

Scheer was also a threat at the plate with a season batting average of .387 and 20 runs batted in. The Rocks also lost another senior, Jordan Pate, who batted .325 and the teams third baseman, which is not a position easily replaced.

Coach Tim Scheer said, “Pate was a good third baseman, however she  suffered a fracture to her ankle late in the season.  Rebekah Strobel stepped in Pate’s spot at third base and did a really nice job.  I look forward to seeing if she can build off last years experience”

This year’s team has potential, with Kierstin Monzyk returning who batted over .330 last season.  Coach Scheer, said “A lot of our success this year will depend upon our defence.  Julie Scheer threw hard and recorded a lot of strike outs taking pressure off of our in field.”

Stephanie Scheer, a sophomore, will be one of the team’s main pitchers replacing her older sister Julie Scheer.  Coach Scheer said, “Stephanie Scheer will probably be our main pitcher, but I am hoping to get some pitching out of Monzyk as well.”

Keys to the Lady Shamrocks success for the upcoming season will rely in a big part on their defense, getting outs, making plays, and not committing errors.  They will also need consistent hitting from Monzyk, Weaver, and Brandy Senecal, who were four of their top 5 batters last year.

The Lady Rocks season opener will be Mon., Aug 22 at Orchard Farm.  The team’s first home opener will be the next night Tues., Aug 23 against Valley Park at Lions field with a start time of 4:30 p.m.
