New Haven, Mo.
– This past Thur., Sept. 1 the Lady Rocks home opener was a scorcher.  Outside it was a scorching temperature of 99 degrees when the JV game started at 6 p.m. and inside the gym it felt even warmer yet.  As fans watched, sweat rolled off their foreheads and this reporter could have rung his shirt out as if he had submerged it in water.

Kelsey Pecaut did not help cool things down because she was on fire, serving 16 straight points in the first set and 11 in the second set recording game highs of 13 aces and 26 points scored leading the Lady Rocks to an easy victory over O’Fallon Christen in two sets (25-4), (25-5) improving to 2-1 on the season.  The Lady Rocks played a nearly perfect game Thursday night recording only 11 errors and were 10 of 10 on service received.  Coach Sharen Speckhals told us after Tuesday night’s game against Belle “one of the biggest areas we need to improve on is setting the ball.  Making good sets so we can make strong attacks”.  Coach Speckhals must have said something in practice the night before because the Rocks did a great job of passing and making good sets for their hitters to get a swing ringing up a team total 21 kills on the night.

Megan Bauer had a game high of 12 assists of the teams 18 and Elise McDonald's game high 11 kills. The Lady Rock’s stats look very impressive however O’Fallon Christen was a very young team only having three seniors on their roster and including two freshmen.  Next years match may be a different story after watching their JV team that featured a handful of good athletes that may become great players next year at the Varsity level.

Coach Speckhals said, “Regardless of the score, I was happy to see our team’s improvement in doing a lot of the little things right, such as covering the corners, making better passes, and a much better job of setting the ball.”

The Lady Rocks have a long week ahead of them playing Tues. at Chamois, Thur. at Montgomery City, and Fri. they will be traveling to Southeast Missouri State to play in the SEMO SPIKE High School Girls Volleyball Tournament.  The tournament features some of the best teams across the state.
