Tribute to Sandy Hook Elementary on Saturday Night Live
--Now that days have passed since 27 innocent lives were lost, mainstream media begins focusing on what could have prevented such tragedy or whatever else they can come up with, instead of acknowledging what people across the United States are doing to honor and remember Sandy Hook Elementary.

Instead of listening to the same thing over and over you can choose what video tributes to watch or read what regular everyday people are saying.

Watch the tribute that was done at the beginning of Saturday night live, video tributes people have made, or what is being discussed on Facebook or Twitter.

These are real people sharing real stories.

Tragic School Shooting - Americans give tribute

How to Talk to your Kids After the ShootingBe Honest, but not Too HonestI have been asked by many parents this weekend after the Sandy Hook Elementary school tragedy; “What should we tell our children? Should we keep quiet or share because we know they will most likely hear about it at school this week, from friends or just overhear someone talking about this.” There are two main principles to keep in mind: comfort and information. Parents should be ready to respond honestly to their children’s questions, but at the level they are asked and with the minimum of detail necessary. This is when age appropriate sharing is necessaryIf your child has managed to remain oblivious to this horror and has not brought it up, then you should wait to share information until they do. You can help keep your child blessedly in the dark by limiting exposure to media coverage. After 9/11, child psychologists coined a new term, “secondary terrorism,” for the destabilizing experience many young children went through after being exposed to the attacks on an endless television loop.If your child has heard than you should answer honestly but ambiguously. “Someone hurt children at their school, we don’t know why.” Then you can comfort your children by assuring them their school is safe along with a touch or a hug. If they ask you how you know their school is safe you can say, “Because nothing like this has ever happened at their schools or even at mommy or daddy’s schools. Don’t go into an elaborate explanation. If the children state they hear a man went to a school and killed kids and they are afraid he might come to their school, say “That man is dead and won’t be going to any schools.”Sticking to family rituals is important as it gives children a sense of normalcy and security. Praying with your children also gives them a sense of peace. However if your children see you crying, keep your answer brief and honest, “I feel so sorry for those children and families.” Parents make sure you seek our other adults for support and don’t burden your children with emotions too big for them to handle from someone who needs to be their support. If you have additional questions or need family support, I would be honored to assist.
