Columbia, Mo. - Captain B. Weimer of the University of Missouri – Columbia Police Department released a statement regarding a local farmer who sustained serious injuries after being run over by a steer.

In Captain Weimer’s statement, he said that officers responded early Tuesday morning at 8:26 a.m to University Parking Lot CG1.  The reporting party had called 911 after a steer got loose from the Veterinary School.

John Brune, New Haven, Mo. had brought the steer to the University of Missouri's College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources' abattoir. The animal escaped while being unloaded.

Officers, staff members, and Brune tried to contain the steer from taking off through campus.  A tranquilizer gun was used to try and stop the steer but the dart was unsuccessful.

Brune then sustained serious injuries when the steer ran over him.  Brune was transported to University Missouri Medical Center.

According to a spokes person with the hospital, Brune is currently listed in fair condition.
