Summary of Friday's State Track Meet - Leath suffers injury

- Friday was “qualify day” at the Missouri State Track Meet, finish in the top four in your heat and move on to Saturday’s State Finals.

Michael Leath had qualified after last week’s sectionals, in three events, 100m, 200m, and 400m.  Leath advanced to tomorrow’s finals in his first two events of the day, 100m and 400m when disaster struck in Leath’s best event, the 200m dash.

After a great start and in first place, Leath was forced to pull back in the 200m after suffering some type of injuring to the back of his left thigh.

Coach John Tucker said, “We really won’t know the extent of his injury until tomorrow.”

Will Smith finished second in his heat in the 800m, advancing to Saturday.  Smith ran a 2:03.23; comparing his time to the other seven qualifiers, Smith’s time ranks 5th with just three seconds separating Smith and Friday’s best time of 2:00.42.

The girl’s 4x400m relay team their best time of the year, 4:17.46, giving them a shot at a State Championship on Saturday.  Of the eight teams that qualified, New Haven is the only team made up of all freshmen.  Rounding out the “Freshmen Flash of Five”, the 4x800m relay team will run in Saturday’s first state finals event.  There was no preliminary race for 4x800m relay.
