St. Clair, Mo. – Sheriff Gary Toelke released a statement this morning regarding last night’s tragic drowning of a 2-year-old child.

Toelke said in his statement that deputies had responded to the 200 block of Deep Woods Rd at approximately 6 p.m. Monday evening for a possible drowning.

When deputies arrived, a St. Clair firefighter was performing CPR on the child.  Deputies began assisting firefighters with CPR until paramedics with St. Clair EMS arrived.

The child has been identified as 2-year old Harley Hedge.  Deputies were advised that Hedge had been staying with her great grandmother in Deep Woods Subdivision off Hwy K, approximately three miles south of St. Clair, Mo. and had guardianship of the child.

The great grandmother told deputies that her and Harley had been picking berries near the residence.  Hedge told her great grandmother that she was going in the house, walking in that direction.

The great grandmother continued picking barriers.  Approximately 3 minutes later the great grandmother did not see Hedge in or near the house.  She walked to the residence and began searching along with other the other children at the residence.

During the search, Hedge was located at the bottom of the swimming pool.  The great grandmother retrieved her from the pool and began CPR until fire personal arrived.

Hedge was transported to Mercy Hospital in Washington where she was pronounced deceased.
