New Haven, Mo. - Earlier this afternoon around 3:00 p.m. New Haven Fire and EMS responded to the 800 block of Gerling Lane off of Highway KK for a gunshot victim.  Franklin County dispatchers advised responding crews that the victim had gone into cardiac arrest.

Franklin County Deputies also responded to secure the scene to ensure the safety of fire and EMS crews.

According Franklin County Sherriff Gary Toelke, deputies determined that the owner of the residence was sighting in a scope for a .22 caliber rifle.  Deputies also determined the individual had been shooting out a door from his workshop at a target.

At some point his wife, identified as Ruth Ann Kuschel, age 63 of New Haven, came around the corner of the shed.  Her husband did not see her approaching the shed.  As he fired a round through the open door the bullet struck his wife in the upper chest area.

The husband began CPR and continued until deputies and paramedics arrived on the scene.

Unfortunately after attempting to resuscitate the victim paramedics contacted their medical control at Mercy Hospital at which time Kuschel was pronounced deceased.

At this time there is no evidence suggesting any type of foul play.
