Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Union, Mo. - During the evening of Feb. 6, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office was informed of a shooting that occurred on Hwy. W in Stanton.  Sheriff's Deputies and the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the area.

Upon arrival, it was determined that a subject was traveling South on Hwy W from I-44 toward his residence located approximately one mile from I-44.  The subject/victim had two young children in the car with him.  The victim reported that there was a vehicle in front of him driving slowly.  When they reached the KOA Camp Ground, the vehicle pulled off to the right and the victim passed the vehicle.

When the victim arrived at his residence, he saw the vehicle he had passed and heard popping sounds, later determined as gun shots, breaking the glass in his vehicle.   The vehicle continued South on Hwy. W.  The victim was going to chase the vehicle but decided against it.   He went into his residence to get a handgun.  As he returned outside, he saw the vehicle coming back, now going north.  There were then shots exchanged by the victim and suspect.  A neighbor to the victim also heard the shooting and came outside with a shotgun that is also believed to have been fired at the suspect vehicle.

The suspect vehicle then went South again toward Meramec Caverns.  The Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team responded to the area and was assisted by St. Louis County's Air Unit.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol located the suspect vehicle parked near a gate to the Meramec Caverns Camp Ground.  No one was around the vehicle.  The Emergency Response Team began searching the area.  One of the deputies observed a subject kick in a door to a cabin near the Caverns.  He then saw the subject inside holding a weapon to his chin.

A female, living in the residence, confronted the subject and was allowed by the suspect to leave the residence.  A Sheriff's Office Hostage Negotiator made contact with the suspect and was eventually able to convince him to exit the residence.  He was taken in to custody without incident.

The vehicle driven by the suspect had been stolen from St. Louis.  The weapon used by the suspect was recovered.  The suspect is a 17-year old white male from St. Louis.   His name is being withheld pending issuance of warrants.  He was taken in to custody for investigation of assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.  No one was injured in the incident.
