--New Haven area banks warn customers of telephone scam.

Many area residents have been receiving automated phone calls stating that their debit cards have been blocked, prompting them to press 1 and enter their 16 digit card number to unblock the card.

Area banks warn customers to NEVER respond to messages that ask for any personal or financial information, whether the message comes as an email, a phone call, or a text message.  Do not click on links in a message or call phone numbers that are left on your answering machine.

The crooks behind these messages are trying to trick area residents into giving up their personal information.  If you get a message and are concerned about your account status, call your bank or the number on your credit card.

If you have responded to messages of this nature please contact your bank immediately.
